Azulej is a series of glazed porcelain tiles designed by Patricia Urquiola for Mutina. The collection’s material composition, inspired by hydraulic cement, combined with its digital print glazing, offers a modern take on ancient hand-crafted majolica tiles. Tonal variations in the glaze and the layered complexity of the patterns themselves reference the hand-crafted nature of classic majolica. The horizontal, vertical, and diagonal patterns furnish versatility in application — supporting patchwork compositions or carefully constructed repeats. Azulej won the 2013 Wallpaper Design Award for Best Trend.
